The Foundation

“For the almost 12 million children living below the poverty level in the United States today, growing up with books of their own is a dream rather than a reality.”

In 2001, the Montsho Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization, was created to promote family literacy. The founder, Jackie Perkins, is a retired early childhood educator and former bookstore owner in Central Florida. The foundation was established to provide a continuum of programs and activities that address the intergenerational nature of literacy.

With an all-volunteer staff, the Foundation has donated thousands of books, held countless literacy workshops, and conducted numerous educational training sessions in the inner-city neighborhoods of Orlando.

In Florida, there are family members in 50 percent of all households with incomes below poverty level who cannot read on an 8th grade level. The Montsho Foundation seeks to stamp out these ills in Florida with a number of unique programs.

Our mission is to have children ready to read upon entering school.

The need is great!
